Mike,
I gotta ask…have you analyzed your sites to see what happened? Did google hammer you for something? Some sites lost ranking? It’s a bit discouraging to see your adsense income cut more than in half…there must be a valid reason why right?
I’d be freaking out if I was in your shoes, but you seem more resilient and will get it back to that level +more in no time I’m sure.
Google changed there search results format to look more like Bing.
I prefer the old look more. It sucks that Mike`s income took a hit. But what can you do? You have to roll with the punches. Google are always changing the rules just because they can.
Mike do you make much money from adsense revenue sharing web 2.0 sites like H.P? would it be worth creating 1,000`s of these pages using different accounts/proxies? You have to promote these pages too to get some clicks..
Or how about if your made your best performing sites huge with 50-100 pages and lots of picture with title tags??
Mike, I know you said that your plan was not trying to analyze your sites, but dedicate creating backlinks, but I would like to let you know, I analyzed most of my sites, and basically none of them is ranking, but I’m still getting some cash, maybe 50% of what I was getting before. I went to check the logs of the sites and the details, and it seems like most of my traffic comes from yahoo and bing, and a little bit to very few sites still ranking exactly the same position they were.
I explain you because maybe your situation is similar, and then probably do the backlinks won’t help at all. I believe it is worth spending one full day just analyzing.
About “Mayday” and google changes, there were actually 2 major updates, one was the “Mayday” during May, but I believe that one didn’t affect you, the another one was Jun 1st, this is the one that affected me, and it looks you too.
hi mike,
I see lot of people blaming may day and Google changes for sudden drop in revenues .But i show no changes in my site rankings however traffic has dropped .i am doing with long tail and short keyword both .in my opinion it is session not google changes and your earning would be come back to normal probably next month.There are probably 380 big and small changes google did last year but no body has noticed it .Now since World cup and summer session both going altogether so peoples not seems to interested to buy stuffs online .they are enjoying their time so on main IMerketers are taking off thier PPC campgins since conversions has drooped badly and ROI has droped.I mean the products which was converting per 40 hops now gone over 200 .CJ and clickbank earnings has also dropped .That would also affect adsense earnings.
however if you are in niche like entertainment ,travel than you suppose to see some batter conversion and traffic during this months.it is okay that you are adding more content to your sites but i would love to focus on building backlinks more rather than adding content to site since it would help you to gain more authority.
anyways best luck
gary
I stopped using Google about a year ago and switched to Bing. I love their new picture every day!!! But this is great to see Google killing off Xfactor sites and about time too. I may even go back to using it again!
This is making me crazy. Because i was about to invest tld. Now i need to think again. Also, my blogspot is getting tricky traffic. So, i am confused. One thing is sure, i need backlinks.
Told you guys that this route is not worth it. Takes too much work with analysis and domains to maintain, not to mention the renewals. I know because I was doing this 2 years ago and I know how google hits sites like these and they hit hard. If I were you, I’d built a large database driven site, get at least 100k pages indexed, get it deindexed 3 months after and bank 30k in 3 months. If you know what you’re doing, you can get 100k pages indexed in under a month.
Do I even care if it gets deindexed? not if it only took me 30 minutes a day to promote. Long term? I don’t even care. I’d start building from scratch and a month later all is back up once again.
Do you really want to waste your time pocketing 30k in 12 months?
@gary
I accept his point of view.. Looks true.
@Gary
Uhhh, what do you mean get your big site de-indexed after 3 months… Why would it get de-indexed unless your doing black hat…
MIke did you impressions drop?
Mike, I feel bad that you have to constantly answer questions on what you are doing. This is why I am very glad that i don’t have a blog where i post continually updates on my income. I’m sure there are times when you just want to do your own sh*t without having to respond to any stupid comments like “I told you so” or “what happened man”. This is especially tough when you have a sharp drop in income.
There are a lot of leeches online that just try and suck up info without giving anything back. If you decided to post a weekly update I wouldn’t blame you. You wouldn’t have to put up with the constant HOW, WHY, WHO, WHAT, WHERE questions that constantly arise. If people don’t know that Google made some major changes in their algorithm then they obviously don’t have any substantial amount of sites.
good luck getting your income back up.
@Kyle. You are absolutely right. Could not have said it better myself. I started out doing a similiar blog. Im really glad i shut it down early on. Im doing OK with my online efforts considering that I work fulltime, wife and mother of 5.
Mike has been an inspiration. IM world can be cold. I have met some great people but I have also met some blood suckers, that the minute you post something of value they are on you to suck all they can out of you.
Mike has done above and way beyond and I know this is just a temporary setback. and as he has said so many times before. Its part of business.
I was recently reading the most current issue of Success Magazine and it was said that some of the riches people in the world had more failures than they did success and the very few successes they had made up for the many failures.
@Dee
Three names come to mind:
Thomas Edison
Michael Jordan
…what’s his name, Hershey…
I’ve no doubt a lot of this issue is centered around several changes, including the algo – but it’s a program, not a human being. I think if you’re above board then there should be no problem – just basic SEO.
Dee, how are you now? On the mend?
Successful people aren’t afraid to fail.
Someone once said(I can’t recall their name), “If you want to double your rate of success, double your rate of failure.”
@jamesthejust you are mostly right on the names
Yes I am up and kicking again go back to the office on Tues. I did work from home about 3days last week. Thanks for asking.
I did manage to get one new site started that will be a large authority site. Finally invested in my own UAW account. Got some submissions started.
Its back to the grind
@Tony
Hey Tony, ya, just answered this, it’s due to the Google Mayday update.. check my last recent comment on yesterday’s post, as well as a few posts back to see when it happened.
It’s a setback sure, but the solution is to put in more time/effort into building the business…To rebuild back up, fast, I’ll need to do a lot of outsourcing.
@Matt
Yup, exactly.. all part of the game.
I made about 200 hubs, although for me it didn’t quite work out as well as I’d hoped..the biggest reason being that I didn’t backlink up each and every one of those hubs.
Right now I’m getting about $30-60/month from the Hubs. I’m more into building up my own virtual real estate these days though, I think this should be the main focus of anyone serious about making a substantial amount of money online.
I’m currently working on building up my sites..
@Jona
Hmm, thanks for sharing that Jona..Interesting. Well, I know that if my traffic was solely coming from Bing/Yahoo, I’d be making 10% of what I was making before as that’s about all the traffic those engines bring in for my sites.
Although I haven’t looked at all 300+ sites, I know that my important sites haven’t dropped off the face of Google…and like I said in a previous post, I don’t mind throwing 2k into outsourcing more content/backlinks and just see what happens.
Well time will tell what happens…thanks man.
@All Is Well
building your own virtual real estate empire is as viable as it ever was…things are always changing, just a part of the game, you’ve just got to change your business plan…build bigger sites, backlink more..
@Jorik
Ya, see the above comments..
@Kyle
Haha! True, true…
Ya, it can get trying at times, it’s all part of maintaining a site like this I guess. Thanks Kyle.
@Dee
Thanks for the kind words Dee.
The way I see it is it’s just added fuel for the fire. The more discomfort, the more fuel you’ve got to change your current circumstances. In the end this is likely to help me build my business up faster than I would have otherwise.
Another way to look at it is like losing a match in a competition. If I’m playing any kind of 1 on 1 game and I lose a match, the first thing I want to do is re-match. I want to take what I’ve learned from the loss and apply it that to see if the next time around I do better. If I then lose the following round, I will again be further fueled and want to re-match again until I win.
It stems from an obsessive desire to improve..that same kind of energy finds it’s way into my business. After taking a hit, sure, it’s annoying, for some it may even be devastating.. But once you’re over that it’s like “OK, this is what I’m up against? Lets do this, lets figure out this next challenge.”
Good to hear!
